Governor Albert Bryan Jr., on January 5, 2026, issued a proclamation earlier this month recognizing National Catholic Schools Week in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The observance takes place from Sunday, January 25, through Saturday, January 31, 2026, in alignment with celebrations across the United States and its territories. In his proclamation, Governor Bryan acknowledged the significant contributions of Catholic schools to academic excellence, faith formation, and community development, and called on Virgin Islanders to applaud the work of these institutions and their educators. The Territory is home to four Catholic schools:
Sts. Peter and Paul School on St. Thomas
St. Mary Catholic School, St. Patrick Catholic School, and St. Joseph Catholic School on St. Croix
The Governor expressed appreciation for the dedication of teachers, administrators, and staff who have continued to nurture students in knowledge and values that strengthen families and communities.
While this recognition was a welcome encouragement, Catholic schools in the Virgin Islands have faced declining enrollment and financial challenges in recent years. These difficulties have placed added pressure on school leadership and the Diocese to sustain quality education and faith formation for families who rely on these institutions. The Governor’s proclamation served as a timely reminder of the importance of supporting Catholic education so that it remains accessible and vibrant for future generations. This proclamation was issued alongside another honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 19, 2026, reflecting the Territory’s commitment to service, leadership, and education as foundations of a strong and compassionate society.
